Instructions for Sampling Sounds in Koala

  • To record sounds, ensure that you are on the Sample page of the workflow. Refer to the screenshots below.

  • Choose Mic to record directly on to app using your device microphone. Alternatively you may click on Import to import a sound file that is already on your device.

  • Selecting the Headphone button while wearing headphones will enable you to hear sounds from your external environment through the headphones, a useful tool for recording.

  • There are 16 red pads available for recording different sound samples.

  • You can also move through the 4 sound banks (A, B, C, D) at the bottom of the page to record up to 64 samples.

  • Press and hold a red pad to record a sound. The recording will stop when the pad is released.

  • If you wish to use a sound effect, it must be selected from FX prior to recording the sound. Sound effects include: more bass, more treble, fuzz, robot, reverb, octave (8ve) up, 8ve down, or bass synth. Note that these effects cannot be added or taken away after the sound has been recorded. One way to get around this is to resample from the app. See section on resampling.

  • Once a sound has been recorded on to the pad, it will turn blue and the wave form will be visible.

  • Listen to the sound you have recorded by pressing the blue pad.

  • Pressing the blue pad will also select the sound and a red border will appear around the pad.

  • If the sound is selected, you have the option to use the dials to adjust volume, pitch, or pan. Double tapping the dial will reset to its original position. Refer to glossary.

  • Clicking on edit while the sample is selected will show the waveform in the box at the top of the screen, enabling you to zoom in on the waveform and trim the sample by sliding the red bar to the front and back of the desired section of the sound.

  • Other options for editing a sound: attack, release, and tone are black buttons which mean they can be varied by sliding the red bar left or right from the centre; one-shot, reverse, loop, hold, choke and tools are white buttons which means they can only be turned on/off or pressed for additional menu options. Refer to glossary.

  • Sounds may be easily duplicated by dragging the blue pad onto an empty red pad.

  • Dragging one sample and placing it on top of another sample will combine the two samples, giving the option to either mix the sounds or add them end-to-end.

  • Sounds may be deleted either by dragging the sample up to the bin, or selecting the sound and pressing the delete button.

GLOSSARY of Edit Options

  • Choke groups: See video for information about the choke feature.

  • Loop: plays the sound on repeat while your finger is on the pad; if you then press the hold button, the sound will continue to loop even after you have released the pad

  • Normalise: make sure the sounds are all at the same level

  • One-shot: plays the whole sound, even if you have released the pad

  • Pan: moves sound from left to right and shifts the volume output / energy to the side to which you are panning it

  • Reverb (short for reverberation): adds depth and space to the sound, simulating the reflections of sound in a larger room size with harder surfaces.

  • Reverse: plays the sound backwards

  • Volume: moves the sound forward and back - the louder something is, the more present or closer it sounds; the softer something is, the less present or further away it sounds.
