Benefits of this approach for music education

· Integration of learning experiences and thus integration of knowledge

· Music history and theory is more relevant in the context of performance/composition/listening experiences

· Experiential learning

· Inclusion of diverse repertoire from Western and non-Western sources

· Develops well-rounded musicians

· Focus on musicking

Drawbacks / challenges

· Even with inclusion of culturally diverse repertoire, there is still a leaning towards western music

· Language for explaining music is based on western art music and may not be suitable for other genres or cultural music

· Using a concepts framework can result in oversimplification or generalisation of the music

· Separating out so many components of music can be confusing and overwhelming for the teacher

· The detail of theory, history and analysis required on each selection of repertoire could take away from actual music making
